Cheap city breaks and weekend breaks

One hundred years ago city breaks meant getting out of the city for a much needed break from smog, pollution and open sewers. Rather like the British Prime Minister does today, infact.

Anyway, these days they have taken on a more glamorous connotation. The northern European man or woman can now break clear of the wind and rain and trundle the boulevards of Southern Europe in their linen suit for on blissful long weekend breaks. Or vice versa. Or anywhere else in the world, for that matter!

And with the advent of high speed rail links, no frills airlines; the lifting of VISA restrictions and political stability across much of the world, city breaks are a sure fire way to do something different for a couple of days.

There is almost nothing standing against their favour. Europe has some of the finest cities in the world which are now so easily and cheaply accessible you might as well almost start commuting.

This, of course, leads to air pollution and the cluttering of the skies. But most of Europe is, through the delights of the high speed rail links across the continent, tantalisingly within reach however you want to travel. They really are an excellent way to break up the monotony of work, save on holidays and make something of a few days spare.
