Cheap flights and last minute flights
Use our advanced search engine to find exactly what you want
Cheap flights. Dontchajustloveem? For the price of a 3am take away and a taxi fare home, you could have been in a glamorous continental destination, hot footing it down a majestic boulevard and into a fine restaurant for the same price.
In Europe, pressured de-nationalisation of the airline industry (don’t bet on Alitalia, please) on the continent saw smart businessmen like Easy Jet’s Stelios and the abrasive Michael O’Leary at Ryanair steal the lumbering old timer airlines’ routes and passengers with some excellent cheap flights. Fly BA to Paris from London for £250? No chance when EasyJet will get you there and back for £3.50 - although you had to forego the complimentary coffee.
Travel on a budget
We’d be wrong to suggest that the budget airlines are all hunky dory - the sheer volume of traffic now crossing the skies has ramifications beyond the act itself, and affects noise and air pollution.
The year 2008 has seen some disastrous failures in an industry which works so close to the margins. Advertised city airports are often nothing of the sort. The bracketed destination following the headline city could be 50 miles away at times, and in bypassing expensive landing fees at established airports you are often deposited at airports of former military bases resembling nothing more than a disused barracks (unsurprisingly).
Transport links into the chosen destination sometimes suffer as a result and can be time consuming. But there are two sides to every coin - you will probably get your bags quicker at the smaller, less well used airport and the whole exercise is deliberately designed to shave pennies off the cost of the fare by cutting costs. What’s a couple of hours for the price of another night’s stay in your chosen destination? Not much!
A choice for the consumer
Another good consequence for the consumer has been the affect the price wars have had on flights costs on even established routes and carriers. BA, for example, does some extremely good rates to continental Europe WITH the added frills and large airport benefits that come with the carrier. Even further forms of transport, like ferries and trains have seemingly slashed costs to encourage travel. It’s a buyers market all round at the moment.
What to know: cheap airlines do pretty much what is said on the tin. You get what you pays for and all that. And with more and more routes opening up all the time the more choice you have in your holiday destinations too, so start booking your cheap flights with our specialist search facility now!
